Scent work (Regulation)

Scent-based work (or commonly known as 'Nose work') provides dogs with a structured, low-pressure way to engage their natural abilities while improving confidence and emotional regulation.

APPROPRIATE FOR

  • Anxious or fearful dogs

  • Easily overwhelmed dogs

  • Dogs lacking confidence

  • Owners seeking structured enrichment

FOCUS AREAS

  • Confidence building

  • Environmental engagement

  • Emotional regulation

  • Independent work

FORMAT

  • Small group classes and structured sessions

NOT DESIGNED FOR

  • Purely sport-focused scent work training (we have great referrals for that)

  • high arousal, chaotic group environments

Confidence is built through controlled, successful experiences. Scent work taps into the dog's primary sensory system, increasing problem solving, and controlled exploration. This creates lower-arousal, increased focus and improved emotional regulation. Regulation develops through repetition, not stimulation. Calm engagement replaces reactivity.

The focus is not performance, it is regulation and improved behavior. The core benefits are behavioral:

  •  increased resilience to stress

  • reduced reactivity

  • improved emotional regulation

  • independent engagement

  • improved focus

Dogs work independently, this is not handler-driven obedience or performance.

FORMAT OPTIONS

OPTION A: SMALL GROUP

  • 3-4 dogs max

  • controlled spacing

  • minimal interaction between dogs

OPTION B: PRIVATE SESSION

  • for higher sensitivity cases

  • no interaction with other dogs

' The dog that started to snap at me for rubbing her, now allows me to pet her. Does she still have limits? Absolutely. But, Laura was able to explain that, like humans, dogs do have limits.  I can now walk her without her pulling to get away and chase a car '

The purpose of a harness: Watch world-class expert Turid Rugaas explain why they are so critical. Turid was Laura's teacher in the Nordic School. She has written two wonderful books called: 'How to raise a puppy' and 'Calming Signals' and we recommend them both!
